Pinot Palooza Melbourne

I spent last week across the ditch in Melbourne & Sydney talking up all things Nautilus.  The excuse to go was the inaugural ‘Pinot Palooza’ in Melbourne – a Pinot Noir tasting extravaganza hosted by Dam Sims & Ben Edwards. This funky event featured a great sound track, Pinot princesses and roadies as helpers & a ‘rock star’ style guide for all the Pinots featured – is your Pinot David Bowie, Grace Jones or Jimi Hendrix? (Nautilus Pinot Noir is a ‘Grace Jones’).  With the room divided between close to 70 Kiwi & Aussie Pinot producers there was plenty of trans-tasman banter and some cracking Pinot Noir from all the regions (but the Kiwis were the best of course).  It was also an opportunity to release our 2009 Four Barriques Pinot in Aussie.  This tiny 97 case blend represents the ‘best of vintage’ and it certainly went down a treat with those that were lucky enough to try it.  After a couple of days ‘palooza-ing’ it was back to more traditional trade visits and it was great to catch up with some old friends – Jose at Bozy Rouge (awesome squid ink paella for lunch) in Melbourne and in Sydney, Rami at the Sugaroom (too early for lunch infortunately) and Blair at the Lord Nelson (perfect timing for a pint of Nelson’s blood on a hot Sydney day).  Of course there were new friends to meet as well and introduce to the virtues of our wines.  It was a fantastic week and my only regret was not getting to Eau de Vie for a ‘Hendricks tea party’ – maybe next time…….
